Restorative yoga a supported, conscious body/mind relaxation practice.
Restorative Yoga is a practice of relaxation. Practice is completed in a series of poses and counter poses that open the body passively, using blankets, bolsters, and other props, to enhance the work of gravity.
When supported with props, the body relaxes and opens, releasing tension and stored-up toxins that can cause illness. Restorative poses offer benefits to both the body and mind, for conditions ranging from insomnia to asthma to chronic pain to migraines to depression.
In a chronically stressed state, quality of life and perhaps life itself is at risk. The body's capacity to heal itself can be compromised, inhibiting recovery from injury or illness, or it may create new illness or injury, including high blood pressure, ulcers, back pain, immune dysfunction and depression.
The antidote to stress is relaxation. Restorative yoga focuses on relaxation, renewal, effortlessness and ease. As restorative yoga is deeply relaxing, it has been described as yoga for the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. It helps to enhance respiration and quiet the “flight or fight” response that is all too prevalent in our lives, thereby relieving the symptoms of stress.
The practice of restorative yoga is a perfect “space” for those who
- are experiencing change and transition and want the opportunity to move/process trapped energy
- are experiencing stress levels that preclude them from experiencing inner peace
- are experiencing low energy levels and unable to “get-going”
- are busy people who are on the go and have a lot on their plate
- want a meditative relaxation practice to replenish the Spirit
Regular practice of restorative yoga brings you back to equilibrium. This practice soothes your nervous system, helps you quiet your mind and invites you to release deeply held tension. The practice of breathe work, coupled with soothing restorative asanas (poses) help balance your energy
Restorative poses cultivate the habit of attention. The mind should always focus on the breath. When you notice your mind wandering bring it back to the breath. You can also focus on where and how you hold tension. Then use the breath as a tool to release the tension. Breathe to the area of tension and on the exhale release the gripping. During these periods of deep relaxation you will be healed and nurtured from within.
Restorative yoga is deeply relaxing. Restorative yoga is absolutely perfect for newcomers, and everyone at every level is welcome.
We welcome all to our restorative yoga practice.
